Using Google Search Console to make smarter Google Ads decisions

Google Search Console has traditionally been a website measurement tool: a place to understand how pages appear in Google Search, which queries generate impressions, and where organic clicks originate.

The reported extension to supported social media properties — Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube — would broaden that role considerably. Instead of treating social content as an isolated channel measured through native platform dashboards, marketers could potentially analyse search visibility, queries, impressions and clicks in the same environment used for website SEO.

For teams running Google Ads, that is more significant than it may first appear.

The value is not simply having another reporting interface. It is the possibility of seeing whether social content is participating in search journeys, which topics create demand across platforms, and where paid search, organic content and social distribution overlap.

Social content is increasingly part of the search results page

Google Search has been incorporating more short-form video, creator content, YouTube results and discussion-based content into its results pages for years. For many commercial and informational searches, users now encounter a mix of websites, videos, social posts, forums and product listings.

That changes the measurement problem for marketers.

A campaign may show strong paid search performance for a category, while related TikTok videos or Instagram posts gain visibility for adjacent, earlier-stage searches. Without a shared reporting perspective, the team may conclude that one channel is creating all the demand or driving all the discovery, when the actual journey is distributed across several surfaces.

If Google Search Console social properties provide query-level data for supported platforms, marketers would be able to review social posts through a search lens rather than only through engagement metrics such as likes, views or follower growth.

That distinction matters. A post can perform well inside a social feed without generating meaningful visibility in Google Search. Conversely, a video or post with modest native engagement may consistently appear for high-intent queries and contribute to a more valuable search journey.

A more useful connection between Google Ads and organic social

Google Ads practitioners already work with query data in several forms: Search Terms reports, keyword planning, broad match learning, conversion data, audience signals and landing page performance. Search Console data adds the organic layer by showing where a website is visible but not necessarily clicked.

Adding social content to that view could make content planning more commercially grounded.

For example, a paid search account may reveal sustained demand around a product comparison, use case or recurring customer objection. If Search Console then shows that a YouTube video or TikTok post is receiving impressions for similar searches, that becomes evidence that the topic is not only an advertising opportunity but also a content opportunity.

The practical question becomes less “Should we produce more social content?” and more “Which formats are earning search visibility around the themes that matter to the business?”

This can also improve campaign coordination. A PPC team may identify expensive, high-volume informational queries that are difficult to convert efficiently through direct-response landing pages. A strong explainer video, product demonstration or comparison post could help cover that earlier stage of demand organically, while paid activity remains focused on high-intent and conversion-led terms.

The reporting advantage is consistency, not perfect attribution

The ability to add a social property, connect it and access clicks, impressions, queries and individual content URLs would create a more consistent measurement environment. That is useful, particularly for organisations where SEO, paid media and social teams currently work from separate dashboards and definitions.

However, it should not be mistaken for end-to-end attribution.

Search Console reports search performance, not the complete value of a social presence. It will not replace platform analytics for engagement quality, audience demographics, video retention, community behaviour or assisted conversions that occur outside a Google Search interaction.

There are also likely to be familiar Search Console limitations. Data may be aggregated, delayed, privacy-thresholded or limited by platform availability. A lack of reported queries does not necessarily mean a post has no value; it may simply mean its impact is occurring within the social platform rather than through Google Search.

For PPC teams, the most productive use of the data is therefore directional. Look for recurring themes, content formats and URLs that consistently earn search impressions. Then compare those patterns with paid search demand, cost per click, conversion rates and landing page performance.

Content prioritisation becomes more evidence-based

The strongest strategic implication is content prioritisation.

Many social calendars are still driven by publishing frequency, internal preferences or short-lived trends. Search Console social reporting could introduce another decision layer: whether a content theme has demonstrable search demand and whether specific post formats are able to earn visibility beyond the native platform.

That may influence decisions such as:

- turning high-performing search-led social topics into landing pages or guides;
- supporting expensive paid keywords with video or creator-style content;
- identifying queries where a social asset already has visibility but lacks a clear commercial next step;
- repurposing successful YouTube or TikTok content into ad creative, provided its message aligns with conversion intent.

The important caveat is that visibility does not automatically equal business value. A social post ranking for broad informational queries may generate substantial impressions but little commercial impact. The right evaluation framework still depends on the role of the content: awareness, consideration, demand capture or conversion support.

A broader view of search performance

If this capability becomes widely available, it will reinforce a direction already visible across Google’s ecosystem: search performance is no longer limited to website rankings and text ads.

For advertisers and marketing managers, the opportunity is to view search demand more holistically. Website pages, paid ads, videos and social posts may all appear at different points in the same customer journey. Measuring them together will not eliminate channel complexity, but it should make content and media decisions less fragmented.

The most useful outcome will be a clearer understanding of which ideas earn attention in search — and which assets are best placed to turn that attention into commercial progress.
